the village of hope seeks to help children infected or affected by hiv, aids and tb in two different ways: we have a 9 bed children's unit to support those infected by hiv and aids and we also run a community-based sports and lifeskills outreach in the informal settlements and squatter camps each afternoon.

this blog has been set up to allow the key members of the team at the village of hope to share their thoughts, photos and experiences as we work in the community of grabouw in south africa

December News

Children’s Unit
The end of the calendar year also sees the end of the school year here in South Africa so we’ve been busy with various end of year events for the kids. Some of our children are finishing pre-primary and moving into primary school which is a real landmark.

We have also been able to discharge one little boy back to his parents and our little girl with cerebral palsy is doing fantastically – she can now walk with just one stick and her balance is improving every day.

Our relationships with the social workers are continuing to strengthen and Emma now has weekly touch points with them to keep abreast of all the situations.

We’ve been working hard at doing lots of paperwork and getting more policies and procedures in place as well as sorting budgets for next year. Although this is sometimes monotonous and mind-boggling, it is very worthwhile and necessary!

Last week we took the staff to the Caledon Spa for their end of year treat. The destination was a surprise but they all loved it and it was a really fun day. We were thankful to have competent volunteers who could take charge of the children’s unit for a few hours so that all the staff could join in.

Sports
We’re very happy to welcome Greg who has arrived from France to assist with the sports outreach for six months. He’s dived straight in and is a real hit with the mentors. We’ve been partnering with the local day clinic and have been using the sessions over the past few weeks to educate the children on the need for immunisations as well as making them aware of the dangers of diarrhoea - which can fast become a killer in the challenging environments where many of them reside.

Rainbow Smiles –HIV support group for adolescents
Rainbow Smiles is coming on leaps and bounds:

We have developed a relationship with the Grabouw day clinic, they will be sending a Councillor to the club once a week and will hopefully be involved in planning and moving the club forward.

We have managed to find some adult education for our 17 year old young leader and are hoping he can start this in January.

One of our club members wanted to go to a school prom and could not afford to go, so she asked if we could help her in making things so that she can sell them to raise the money. This is really positive that our young people are not just asking for hand-outs but are looking at ways they can try and solve problems.

The young people also wanted to give back to the community by singing at an old age home. We did this on Friday and we were extremely proud of all the children who sang, danced, played the drums and wrote and read poems out loud. They all did very well particularly as the audience was not very responsive.

Other News:
Volunteers:
As well as Greg we’ve been able to welcome Katie from the UK. She is a youth pastor so has a wonderful knack with the kids!

Last month also saw a visit from our extended family from InFocus Church in Augusta. We love hosting these guys and each time they come the do wonders for us both practically and emotionally. And Helen from the USA board popped over to visit too which is always lovely!

Emerging Leaders:
The Leadership for Hope course that took place in October seems to have had a really positive impact on the community. Those who were on the course were asked to share what they had learned and they are all very passionate about it. One of our House Moms attended and shared it with her brother which inspired him to decide to complete his education and Tim has been approached to see whether it can be rolled out to all the employees in the local municipality. It looks like the community have finally been given some training which they can apply to their lives which is very exciting so watch this space!

Skydive for Thembalitsha:
If you are slightly crazy and live in the UK, Ii is now possible to take part in a skydive to raise funds for Thembalitsha.
This is the chance of a lifetime – the only way to experience a skydive without spending thousands of pounds becoming a free-fall parachutist.

• Jump and training completed in one day

• Harnessed to an experienced parachute instructor at all times

• Jump from at least 10,000 feet

• Free fall 5,000 feet, falling at 120 mph

• Landing controlled by instructor

• Choose from 1 of 25 British Parachute Association approved centres across the UK.

Cost of challenge:
You don't pay anything; but you will need to fundraise a minimum of £395 in sponsorship money. We can provide you with lots of fundraising support. A minimum of £115 will go directly to Thembalitsha and the rest covers the cost of your jump. Anything raised over the minimum target will also go to Thembalitsha, providing healthcare, education and training to South Africa's poor.

January News

The Christmas period was a wonderful time in the children’s unit. With the school children on holiday, we made the most of it and took trips to the beach when we could. We were donated a fantastically glitzy Christmas Tree by some of our neighbours who run a Christmas decoration company and that helped add some festive spirit to our usual surroundings.

We were very happy to be able to spend Christmas Day hosted by The Weigmans, a wonderful couple from our local church who opened their home to all 24 of us (including visiting family) for a beautifully relaxed day by their pool. We were able to coax the children into the water and encourage them to play with all the inflatables and just relax and have fun together. The children received some gorgeous shoeboxes full of presents from the generous folk at Operation Shoebox. As you can imagine, they were very excited.

As you may have heard, 2013 has started with a lot of tension here in Grabouw and there has been strike action this past week which has had us all on high alert. The protesting has included fires and looting and at one stage we had 200 people going past our front gate. The local farmers have been on patrol 24 hours a day trying to protect the farms and the sound of gunshot has not been unfamiliar either. It has been very disconcerting and we are trying just to keep carrying on with our usual activities but it has been tiring being alert all the time and it has been difficult to get staff in on occasions.

Obviously our major concern is for our staff and children that we work with who live in the community and are closest to all the action. We have been praying for their safety through all of this and the striking does seem to have calmed down since the beginning of the week.

Although this is happening, this week sees another one of our children take his first step into preschool. We can’t believe he is starting! – It only seemed yesterday we were looking after a 2-week-old bundle of baby!

Community Work

Sports Outreach:
Our community work took a break over the long summer holidays which gave us time to bless our sports mentors this month with a trip to Green Point stadium to watch South Africa play football against Norway. It truly was a great time for the 16 young people  and for some of them it was their first experience of the big city a quite a culture shock.

Other News

Sleigh:
Fast becoming a Village of Hope tradition, we took our make-shift sleigh around the town the Friday before Christmas. Complete with Johan as our South African Father Christmas, we towed the sleigh behind the bakkie and gave our sweets and apples to the children. Although this may seem a trivial to do for a community in such need, it really does bring a smile to everyone’s face and spread a little joy.

Volunteers:
We have been very happy to have lots of family visitors over the Christmas and New Year period and of course, we hoodwinked them into helping us out with our work whilst they were here!

We also said ‘au revoir’ to Tim Berger who served with us for all of 2013 and was a fantastic complement to the maintenance team. Tim isn’t actually leaving Grabouw but it moving on to do some other work and will still come and help us out when he has time.

Towards the end of the month we will be welcoming Shannon, from America, who is coming to serve with the other long-term volunteers and the Stuttgart Architect students will be returning for their third visit and be developing our buildings and land further – watch this space because this time there is going to be a big change!

new year new schools

first day at creche......so cute!
over the last week our older children have started their new school year, for two of the girls they moved up to the next class, our 6 year old boy he made the big step to start at primary school and our 3 year old she started creche for the first time.......starting something new is always an event that is filled with excitement and trepidation and starting school is no different. for our kids there is no mom or dad waving from the gate, but we are able to support them at this special time and it is wonderful to see these little ones leave in the combi in the morning, uniforms and ruck sacks shiny new, but the best is to hear the hubbub as they return to tell their stories of friendship and learning.

school visit!

this morning we have had the pleasure of welcoming the children who attend the local special needs school in grabouw, run by another christian couple. this the school that our 10 year old boy (who is now back at school, praise God) goes to and it was wonderful to see him with his class mates who enjoyed playing on our jungle gym and having a snack with some of the children from our unit.

the photo shows the children saying their prayers before their snack!

first days at school

today is the start of a new school year in south africa and for one of our little girls it was her very first day, maz (and lizi allen) left the village of hope at 7.30am, and by 8.00am she had joined her new classmates for the start of her school life. unfortunately she (the little girl not maz or lizi) had a slight accident before she had even got into the car, but we understand that the rest of her day got a little better!

please pray for all of our children, 4 of whom attend local schools, or preschools and for all the other children that we work with in the community via our sports outreach who moved up classes from last year.

assembly what assembly

this morning i woke early as i was going to visit a school assembly with reagan and sandra, after waiting around for about 20 minutes, with loads of kids shouting out hello oom tim (afrikaans for uncle tim), we were told that the school wouldn't be having an assembly as planned this morning...what i thought, we got up early, prepared over the weekend, trying to buy watermelons, out of season!, and now there's not going to be a school assembly....why?......oh cause it's raining came the reply, still a poor excuse i thought but then when sandra showed me where they hold the school assemblies it made a little more sense....the school assembly would be held in an outside courtyard between the classrooms and they didn't want the 500 or so kids to stand in the rain whilst we led a time of prayer, worship and teaching......a good call in the end i felt!........

today we also had the pleasure of welcoming michael and janet arthern, from southcourt baptist church in aylesbury, along with their son peter, onto the village of hope, i also spent sometime showing them round the squatter camps and informal settlements were we work and introduced them to the team at thembacare in grabouw, i think that they were impressed with all that we are doing as we seek to bring new hope to our community...
