the village of hope seeks to help children infected or affected by hiv, aids and tb in two different ways: we have a 9 bed children's unit to support those infected by hiv and aids and we also run a community-based sports and lifeskills outreach in the informal settlements and squatter camps each afternoon.

this blog has been set up to allow the key members of the team at the village of hope to share their thoughts, photos and experiences as we work in the community of grabouw in south africa

thoughts from volunteers and mission teams!

the infocus mision team at the very 'country
club' that shana speaks of....
living in the day to day 24/7 world of the village of hope is an awesome experience and it's amazing to think that our small actions are having a huge impact in our community. we are obviously aware of the plight of the poor, we work with them each and everyday, however there are days when we forget that we still live in a very parallel universe, on one side are 'the haves' and on the other side are 'the have not's'.

we are blessed to be able to host volunteers at the village of hope, these come in all shapes and sizes, they can be individuals who have felt the call to serve for three months or more, or can be larger groups of short term mission teams, mainly coming from churches who are linked to the wider foundation.

it's interesting to watch the dynamics of these teams as they see for themselves the impact of our work via our various missions in our town and have an opportunity to meet the people we serve, it's also interesting to watch each individual as God moves them as they spend time with us.

we do try to give a broader view of our work on this blog but it's always good to read how other people see things during their time with us. over the last few weeks we have hosted a couple of mission teams, one from dallas and the other from the infocus church in augusta, georgia, who kept a blog about their time with us, we would encourage you to read their blog by clicking here and to see the things that impacted them during their time with us.

one of our longer volunteers, shana cox, has also been busy blogging and her latest post really picks up on the plight of our sports mentors, we are sure that you will be as moved as we were when we read this well constructed post so please sit down grab a coffee and or a tissue and follow this link to her blog and her post entitled 'opposite hillsides'.

we want to thank these teams and individual people for the impact they made and the skills that they shared with us.....it really does make a difference.

help from our friends from dallas

clearing the old tin roof
last week we hosted our first major mission team in the new short term volunteers accommodation, the teams who had used it before were mainly couples or families so it was good to see that the building held up and was enjoyed by the guys from dallas.

during the week they helped us with some jobs around the village of hope, sanding down the new board walks, chopping up wood to ensure we have enough dried for next winter, sorting donations and playing with the children in the unit. they were also able to help out with our community work, planning and running our rainbow smiles support group, assisting at our sports outreach and making house visits with our thembacare home based careworkers, they also joined us for our weekly thembacare service which was a joy to behold.

after the installation of the new roof..
on friday the men helped to put a sail sheet onto one of our discharged children's homes (see photos) which was a real blessing to him and his grandmother and at lunchtime they joined us on the soup run and prayed for the soup given out to the creches and children in the community.

it was a blessing to know this team and we pray that they will continue to be a help to our other thembalitsha projects that they are visiting this week, we hope they will make as much of an impact at those projects as they did with us in grabouw.

August News

Yes, Tim and Maz are going to be at your disposal throughout November and early December so if you want them to come and pay you a visit just drop us an email. We’ve also got bands doing gigs to raise money for us and another day of prayer coming up. Make sure you check out the ‘events’ section of this post so you don’t miss out!

It’s wonderful to have Rob and Emily back with us from their 4 week trip to England. Mel has been away for a few weeks on a funding support trip to the USA so our long term team, which completed by Arron and Johan, is still down one member. That said we have had some wonderful support from Britton, Tyler (who’s brother and father joined him for a few days from Dallas), Barbara Wood who has returned for the third time, Katrin who is serving with us for 6 months and Claire who is staying with her Grandmother in town...so once again it has been a very busy time!

Children’s Unit
Our top news story is that our 11-year-old boy has returned from his ‘holiday’ at Thembacare Athlone, following his time in hospital with further respiratory problems. We had a good meeting with the team from the Red Cross children’s hospital who were happy for us to provide that special care that he needs. Unfortunately he is now constantly on oxygen so his attendance at school is restricted, however he is so glad to be back home with Mommy Maz and the wonderful house mom’s who care for him so well.

With  our 11-year-old being away for all that time we did have some space to take in another little boy, aged about 1 year, who’s mother had abandoned him with his Grandmother, who was sick herself with TB. Therefore we have shifted a few beds and cots around to help us provide beds for the 10 little children who live with us at the Village of Hope.

This new boy should only be with us for a short time as we have already made contact with the family who really do want to care for him. Please pray for his family that they might understand the responsibility that they have towards this boy.

All of our House Mom’s have been now completed the St John’s First Aid course. It’s good to have a full team back together. These ladies, who all live in the community, do an amazing job for us, looking after the needs of our children on a 12 hour shift is not an easy job.

The children (of school age) have been back for a couple of weeks, and we were able to secure a place for our little 4-year-old boy to join the other children at school. He had been so excited about going to school (and had been on the school run, just for the ride, for over 6 months) but when the volunteer led him into his class for the first time tears filled his eyes and he wasn’t quite sure what to do! By the time we collected him he had a smile on his face and was full of stories about the new friends he had made and the exciting things that he had done. It’s so special to be able to offer these children the ‘normal’ experiences that we all take for granted.

Sports Outreach and Community Work
Our sports outreach clubs started again after the winter holidays. We can’t wait till the next Dutch students join us next week! Our ‘skeleton’ staff of Arron, Emily, Kat and Britton are joined each week by our local sports mentors, Justin, Roger, Michael, Reggie and Lee who are all pupils at the local schools. These guys do a great job for us and have enabled us to continue to provide clubs in each of the 5 areas in Grabouw: Hillside, Iraq informal settlement, Waterwerks, Site View and Rooidakke (Netball only) as well as our outreach onto a farm in the Elgin Valley.

We have been excited about the amount of girls joining us to play netball, especially in Iraq. These girls spend a whole day at school and then have to complete ‘chores’ when they get home. This could be collecting water from the local standpipe with 25 litre buckets or preparing the meal for the family. They often arrive late because of this  but to see them enjoying the games that we prepare for them is such a blessing and encourages us to ‘keep going’ as we seek to build valuable lessons into their tough lives.

We still continue to ask for second hand soccer boots, sizes 2 – 7 (UK), which will enable us to keep a stock for when we play what we hope will be more regular games against other clubs in the local area. If you have access to an old pair and live within kicking distance of Grabouw/Cape Town then we would love to hear from you. However our need is growing for a full time Sports Outreach Co-ordinator, which could be a position that is filled by a local person and or complimented by an Intern who could stay with us for a year’s placement.

Other News
The Straw House:
Tyler, Arron, Johan and Katrin, along with support from Rob and Em, have been busy ‘plastering’ the inside of the new house that was built by the team from Stuttgart earlier in the year. The process involves applying our ‘homemade’ lime, straw and sand mix by hand to the straw walls. Not only is this time consuming but has proved somewhat dangerous with a few people receiving ‘burns’ from the lime.

Volunteers:
Tyler has now left us to return to Dallas. Before he left he was joined by his older brother and father for a few days. It was great for Tyler to be able to show his family around the work that we are doing here in Grabouw and the projects that he has become so involved with. They also cooked us up an authentic Mexican meal before they left bringing all their spices from the States!

We said our goodbyes to Joe and his team from Newcastle, but then had the privilege of welcoming Suzie and her all-female team from the Mid Cities church (the church where Tyler attends in USA) who were over with us for a week.

Events
Well, first of all we have to say a huge congratulations to newly weds Rachel and Neil Thomlinson. But we also want to say a big thank you! Instead of choosing to stock up on crockery and coffee machines at John Lewis they decided to hold their wedding list at Just Giving and give us the money!! Bless you guys!

Another thank you goes to Lisa Smith who braved a sky dive and raised £200. No mean feat (or should it be feet?!)

We continue to be stunned by the lengths you lovely people go to in order to raise funds for us! – Keep it up!!!!

SEPTEMBER: Rock for Thembalitsha
If you are near Aylesbury on 4th September why not rock out and support us at the same time?! There will be 6 live bands playing in the market square from 2pm as well as a BBQ and a raffle (where you can win a large flat scree telly – not bad eh?!)

OCTOBER: Village of Hope Prayer Day
We are holding another prayer day on 15th October. Our previous prayer day earlier this year was really fruitful and we very much appreciated being lifted up in prayer for 24hrs. It reminded us that we needed to keep prayer at the top of the agenda.
You can even sign up now if you like: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/prayer66

NOVEMBER: Tim and Maz back in the UK
Yes, you will be treated to another visit from the Walkers! They are going to be in the UK all of November. Please let us know if you would like them to come and visit you! They are available for church talks, house groups, schools. They really do have amazingly inspirational testimonies from their life in South Africa and would welcome the chance to share them. They will also be accompanying WholeHearted (see below)

DECEMBER: Wholehearted band on tour
If you haven’t already heard of Wholehearted or read about them on our blog then where have you been?! Not only do these guys have a great sound but they are fantastic supporters of our cause and are going to be touring England for two weeks at the beginning of December. If you are keen to hold a Wholehearted gig at your church or school then please email emily@thembalitsha.org.za as soon as possible. When you book Wholehearted you will get a Tim and Maz appearance in with the deal! You can find out more and hear their sound at www.wholehearted.co.za

We are going to be posting these events on the Thembalitsha Facebook page as details develop.

If you have an idea for an event that you would like to organise for us do let us know as we would love to have more things planned in the diary for this year and desperately need more people to be doing stuff for us. We will do our best to support you in making it successful.

October Newsletter

OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

November is Spring time here in South Africa and is always a glorious time in Grabouw. The apple trees are just flowering, the roses are having their first flush (yes that’s what it’s called!), the local farms and vineyards open their doors to the public to show off their wonderful gardens, and the prospect of a summer of hot and dry weather is just around the corner (sorry to rub it in folks!).....however not everything is so rosy in the valley as many hundreds if not thousands of families struggle with unemployment, lack of adequate housing and major health and welfare issues....thanks to your support we are making a real difference in the sleepy rural town of Grabouw. Read on to find out what we have been doing this month:

CHILDREN’S UNIT

Our 9 bed childrens unit has once again had 100% occupancy and with 15 children already placed back with their families in the community we are kept on our toes as we provide a loving environment to those infected or affected by HIV, AIDS and TB in the home and support those families who we have successfully placed the children home to.

All this takes a great deal of time, money and self motivation and we cant explain how much we are benefiting from the arrival of Mel Kidd, who has joined us from Dallas for at least one year. Mel was part of a mission team last year and fell in love with the project and the children, she is now assisting Maz to create some much needed discipline and structures in the children’s daily lives, her arrival has also freed up Lisa to become more involved in caring for those we have already placed home.

It looks like we have successfully found a home for our eldest (9 year old) girl with a loving family in Khayelitsha, this home is run by an amazing charity called ‘Home from home’, we are hoping that this will be the first of many placements and we are also looking to work with them in the future as we seek to set up our first ‘cluster home’ in Grabouw....all exciting stuff but we will be a very sad to see her leave.

SPORTS OUTREACH & COMMUNITY WORK

Our sports outreach has taken another exciting turn as we have started to work in two local schools providing sports clubs as after schools activities, unfortunately during the month and transition period we have lost contact with some of the children that we were serving in our communities, however the numbers are growing each week and we are seeing new faces, we now think that around 200-250 children attend our life skills-based bible clubs each week, which is great news.

Last Tuesday we were joined for the afternoon by Matt Walker, Matt came out prior to and during the FIFA World Cup, Matt a real London (pronounced Lunn dunn) boy is fantastic with the kids, unfortunately during the session that he was running he fell and twisted his ankle and we spent the rest of the afternoon in the local government run day hospital in Grabouw...which was a bit of an eye opener, but the service we received would put many western hospitals to shame...get well soon Matt!

Arron has been in Uganda for a couple of weeks with Big Shot Cricket so we have missed his input on the sports side, however Johan has been doing a great job around the farm and we have now got the irrigation system working which has allowed us to plant our first crops (we want to thank Elgin Learning Foundation for their support in this by providing much needed labour to till and prepare the land.

Tim and Daz were also able to bless one of our children’s families with a new roof!, well not quite new but after a conversation had by Tim and a local yachtsman we were given some old sails which we installed over this tin home to keep the spring rains at bay.

OTHER NEWS AND VOLUNTEERS

October was another busy month for volunteers, we hosted the wonderful mission team from Dallas, ably lead by Krissy Clarke, this is the third time this team from Trinity Church have stayed with us and we are continually blown away by their servant hearts and the way that they not only embrace The Village of Hope but also the work that Thembacare are doing in Grabouw.

Rob and Emily House, along with their children Rosie and Isaac, returned to support our work for the next two years, Rob will be heading up the International Fundraising side of the Thembalitsha Foundation, so don’t be surprised if you hear from him asking for your help in raising much needed funds for not only the Village of Hope but also the wider Thembalitsha projects that we run. Emily will be focusing her time on the new Thembalitsha website and also providing materials to help with fundraising both here in South Africa and wider. Emily is also heading up our volunteer programme so if you are interested in visiting our project then you will be hearing from Em!

We have also benefited from the time that Barbara Wood has spent with us, she has been helping out wherever the need arises, whether that be with the finances, the weekly food shop for the unit (not a job for the faint hearted) or the Friday soup run, we will be sorry to see Barbara leave to return home to sunny England next week.

Another returning volunteer is Fran Black who arrived with her ‘boyfriend’ Spencer, Fran will be staying until Christmas. Unfortunately Spencer was only over for a couple of weeks but we trust he had a good time as he visited homes with our nurses and got involved in the sports outreach. Fran is a diamond and we enjoy her just being around.

During the month we were blessed with our first donation that came through the sales of the wonderful Wholehearted Album, if you haven’t purchased it yet then please visit their web site at www.wholehearted.co.za or visit itunes or cdbaby for more info. The CD also includes a bonus DVD with a video of one of the songs which we shot in our local township and an interview with Tim, well worth the money!

We were also visited by Jo and Josh who came over from England to bring much needed supplies, Jo found us via the Stuff your rucksack, see link here http://www.stuffyourrucksack.com/charity.php?id=118

mel arrives

well the team at the village of hope is growing by the day, last week we welcomed back rob and emily house for their two year stint with us and this week mel kidd from trinity church in dallas has joined us for a year.

we want to welcome mel onto the team and here the photo shows her learning the ropes with maz as they draw up the ARV (anti retro viral) meds for our children.
